Del Mar Relocation & Community Guide

Why People Love Del Mar

Del Mar isn’t just a place — it’s a feeling. Perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, this small seaside town offers a rare blend of natural beauty, historic charm, and understated luxury. Locals often describe Del Mar as the “last real beach town” in coastal San Diego — and for good reason.

With year-round sunshine, pristine beaches, and a walkable village atmosphere, Del Mar attracts those who appreciate both lifestyle and legacy. From early morning surf sessions and scenic bluff hikes to boutique shopping and award-winning dining, everything feels just a little slower, a little more thoughtful here.

One of the most treasured aspects of Del Mar is its strong sense of community. The residents take great pride in preserving its character — low-density zoning, tree-lined streets, and thoughtful development have kept the town’s unique charm intact. Unlike other coastal cities that have given way to high-rise development, Del Mar remains deeply committed to protecting its scenic views, open space, and architectural heritage.

Whether it’s the magic of a summer race day at the Del Mar Racetrack, sunset walks along the beach, or dining under the stars in the village plaza, life here feels nostalgic yet refined. For many, Del Mar represents the perfect mix of coastal relaxation and elevated living — a place where families put down roots, retirees embrace peace, and second-home seekers find the ultimate escape.

If you're drawn to timeless California living with a modern twist of luxury, it's easy to see why Del Mar continues to top the list for discerning homebuyers.

A Brief History of Del Mar

Del Mar’s story begins in the 1880s, when railroad employee Theodore Loop discovered this idyllic coastal stretch and declared it “the most attractive place on the entire coast.” His wife, inspired by a popular poem, named it Del Mar — meaning “of the sea.”

Soon after, developer Colonel Jacob Taylor envisioned Del Mar as a glamorous seaside resort. In 1885, he built the original Casa Del Mar hotel and pavilion, attracting early tourists and socialites. While the original structures eventually gave way to fire and storms, the town’s resort legacy was reborn in 1910 with the opening of the Stratford Inn — a grand hotel that quickly became a magnet for Hollywood stars.

In 1937, the legendary Del Mar Racetrack was founded by entertainment icons Bing Crosby and Jimmy Durante, marking a new era of prestige and excitement. Bing famously greeted guests at the gates on opening day, and in 1938, Del Mar hosted a historic match race featuring Seabiscuit — putting the racetrack (and the town) on the national stage.

Del Mar officially became an incorporated city in 1959, choosing independence over being absorbed into the City of San Diego. Ever since, residents have fiercely protected its low-key village charm, preserving blufftop vistas, walkability, and a uniquely nostalgic feel — a rare feat in fast-developing Southern California.

Today, Del Mar remains true to its roots: a seaside retreat that honors its past while embracing thoughtful growth, where history lives on in every charming cottage, vintage hotel, and ocean-view trail.

Cielo Community Map

Inspired by the villages along the northern Mediterranean, Cielo presents a private residential land preserve in the coastal hills of Rancho Santa Fe. With nearly 1,500 acres of dramatic terrain and panoramic ocean and mountain views, Cielo's luxury home sites rest atop peaks reaching nearly 1,500 feet high.

Continuing the legacy of the original vision for Rancho Santa Fe, the tranquil residences of Cielo gracefully blend with the natural terrain and terrace into the hillsides, respecting the views in every direction. Within a distinguished design palette, a diversity of details reflect the architectural styles of Santa Barbara, Spanish Ranch, European Country House and Italian Villa.

Eight miles east of the coast, Cielo is recognized by its signature 200-foot Roman aqueduct and Italianate Gatehouse which set the stage for what lies beyond as the grandeur unfolds along tree-lined drives following the winding terrain where over half of the community is a preserved habitat.

With meticulous attention to building and maintenance standards, Cielo is one of the few communities in San Diego County that has earned a Shelter-in-Place designation by the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Department.
